Larry’s Powder Alert Weather Update March 18, 2014

As I promised on last Sunday night’s powder alert, there is snow in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. However, the computer models have eased up a tad on the total amount of snowfall.

A cold front, followed by cool northwesterly flow, will move though Wednesday with snow and falling snow levels. Wind could be an issue on the ridges. Expect 3-7″, with a snow level of 3000ft for Wednesday with continuing snow. By Wednesday afternoon the snow level will drop further and bottom out at 1500 ft by Thursday. There is a chance of a double convergence zone (CZ) on Wednesday evening. One convergence will enhance snowfall at Baker, the other at Stevens/The Summit. The Stevens/Summit CZ is more likely.

Expect another 3-6″ by Thursday morning. Quality improves on Thursday with the lower snow levels. But snowfall wraps up. I like Wednesday, but I favor Thursday. Long time readers know I always like the second half of most storms, because they are more predictable with lower snow levels. The trade off is; usually snowfall rates decrease or end in the cooler, dry air.

Friday through the weekend will see partly sunny skies, but a weak system may produce a little snow Saturday night (SL 3500ft)
