Larry’Powder Alert — Weather Update – Feb 7th

It continues very cold in the Cascades, with arctic air well entrenched in the Northwest. You really need to bundle up on the slopes for Friday and Saturday.

Today will see heavy snow just to our south in Oregon, as the main storm tracks south of us. A few inches (2-4″) of snow may move up the Cascades into White Pass and Crystal. The real winners in Washington will be Mission Ridge and especially Bluewood, near Walla Walla with 4-7″ of high quality champagne powder. Expect powder with silky groomers there.

If you haven’t been up in a while, because of the games the last few weeks, you’ll be surprised at the improvement in snow coverage. Sure, there are some low elevation thin spots, but conditions have improved.

Like Saturday, Sunday may have a little new snow for the south Cascades. I have been tracking the bigger changes for Monday. Milder air will move in with the snow level rising to 3000ft on Monday-expect 6-12″ in the Cascades Monday – Wednesday. Monday will begin a series of storms, perhaps lasting a week or more for the Cascades.

The real changes coming next week, are because the westerly winds break though with a conveyor of storms aimed in our direction. The active pattern will continue through mid month (Feb 19 or beyond). The Climate Prediction Center supports that idea as they forecast above normal precipitation- that means mountain snow piling up.

To recap: Weekend in WA Cascades – 2-4″ mainly south through Saturday, Sunday mainly dry cold, Monday and beyond increasing snow.

Get ready, it is going to start happening with serious snow again next week.
