Recap: North Face Masters at Crystal Mountain

Bluebird in the Northwest – it’s a phrase we aren’t as familiar with, but one that gets Washingtonians out of bed in a jiffy on cold winter mornings. With a 100-inch base, a cloud-less sky, and endless backcountry terrain available for slaying, Crystal Mountain proved to be the perfect venue for the fifth annual North Face Masters of Snowboarding. Each season, this rugged event tests the dynamic all-mountain riding styles of snowboarders from all over the country, who duke it out for bragging rights and the additional incentive of winning $50,000.

Both established and up-and-coming riders were offered two days in which to qualify for the final event, which took place on Crystals famous 7000 foot peak, Silver King. “Crystal Mountain is the hidden gem of the Northwest and has great terrain that lends itself to the big mountain riding style of the competition,” said Head Judge and snowboarding legend Tom Burt. “To do well, riders have to choose a line that is technical, ride the line fluidly, hit some airs with style, and have good control while riding.”
