Powder Alert – Weather Update

Sunday November  23

The Dump Continues

The snow is falling again in the Cascades today, after a partial break late yesterday. Expect 5-10″ of new snow from Sunday through Monday. It’s looking good, but we still need additional snow for substantial ski area openings. The snow level is not rock bottom, but at 3000-3500ft, most slopes are getting snow. Monday the snowfall will take a break.

Tuesday will get messy with a warm front producing rain on snow in the Cascades. Snow level will rise to 6500ft, with moderate to heavy rain. The rain will consolidate the new snowpack. There will be some limited snowmelt. Studies show it takes 10″ of rain to melt a foot of fresh snow at about 40 degrees. Strong, moist winds will melt a little more. There is 3-5″ of rain in the forecast on Tuesday, mainly in the north Cascades. There will be some melt, , mainly at lower elevations. Wednesday will see mainly dry.

There is some uncertainty, but it looks a tad cooler with more snow than rain in the Cascades for Thursday and Friday. Timing of wet and dry periods has been all over the map.

Sincerely yours,

The Grand Poobah of Powder
