Larry’s Powder Alert – December 7, 2014

Powder Alert – Weather Update
Sunday Dec 7

First, the good news. After the heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be lower snow levels with new snow at the end of the week.

Now, here is the not so good news. A Pineapple Express will bring heavy rain to the mountains, with a 7000ft snow level.  The heaviest rainfall will be in the Olympics and North Cascades. The unsettled weather begins Monday night and continues until late Wednesday or early Thursday. There could be 5-10″ of rain in the 48 hr period. No powder, but good flooding potential.

Right now we have very little snow below 4000 ft , a little more between 4000-5000 and above 5000ft  about 6″ to maybe 2-3ft in spots. So far, we’ve had some partial, limited openings at the ski areas – but we need some dumpage. The heavy rain doesn’t melt as much snow as most people think, but we don’t have much in the first place. We will loose 1-4″ of the snow pack with this heavy rain and wind.

New snow will fall in the Cascades on Thursday and Friday with cooler air and leftover moisture. That pattern will produce 6-12″ of new snow on Thursday and Friday, with a 3000-4000ft.
